Practical Statistics Lecture Series

by Louis Lyons and Müge Karagöz

30th April - 3rd May 2010

Feza Gürsey Institute, Istanbul

This is the first announcement of a Statistical Lecture Series by Louis Lyons and Muge Karagoz at the Feza Gursey Institute, on 30th April – 3rd May, 2010, in Istanbul. The objective of this lecture series is to bring PhD students and young scientists up to date on statistical methods. As we have entered the important LHC era, the emphasis will be on applications in high energy physics. Thus, we especially encourage young (senior undergraduate or graduate level) students specialising in HEP to apply. However students/RAs from other physics topics, such as astrophysics, can also be considered if there is availability. The attendance is limited to 40 students.

The school will be taught in English and will consist of 4 days of lectures with typically 2-3 lectures per day, discussion sessions and hands-on sessions. 1st May afternoon will be a free afternoon. The lectures will be given by Dr. Louis Lyons and hands-on sessions and some discussions (in Turkish) will be conducted by Dr. Müge Karagöz. Hands-on sessions will consist of solving statistical problems, which will involve writing simple computer programmes.

The lectures will start at a basic level, however, we will assume some basic statistics knowledge and minimum programming language literacy. The topics to be covered in the course and the detailed programme can be found at the school web site. The web page will also include references to reading material before the school starts. Students will be given a certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the school.

Applications will be accepted starting January 15, 2010. Applications and references are required to be received by February 28, 2010, for full consideration. Please check the web site for instructions on how to apply. Boarding for the students and the transportation within Turkey (by land) will be fully funded by the Feza Gürsey Institute. For more information on the school, please contact the lecturers at m.karagoz1[at]physics.ox.ac.uk and l.lyons1[at]physics.ox.ac.uk.
