How to get to the Feza Gürsey Institute
OverviewFirst-time visitors to Istanbul may prefer to travel to the Institute by taxi: For the more adventurous, the Institute can be accessed by public transportation from both of the major centers on the Asian side of Istanbul: Üsküdar and Kadıköy. Detailed instructions on how to reach these centers from Atatürk International Airport can be found below: If you are arriving in Istanbul by bus, all major bus companies provide shuttles to Üsküdar and Kadıköy from their main terminals. If you arriving by train on the Asian side, the main railway station at the end of the line, Haydarpaşa, is located directly in Kadıköy. Once you are in either Üsküdar or Kadıköy, the links below explain how to travel to the Institute: A map of the bus stops closest to the institute is available at the bottom of this page. Taxi InstructionsA taxi from the airport to the Institute will be cost about 50YTL. Since only Turkish currency is accepted, make sure to use one of the exchange offices in the airport beforehand. A taxi driver is required by law to start the meter at the beginning of the trip. If he does not, or attempts to negotiate a fixed price for the whole trip, use another taxi. Most drivers do not speak English, but it is sufficient to show the Institute's address on a piece of paper:
Emek Mah. Rasathane Yolu No:68 Çengelköy The entire trip can last anywhere between 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the traffic conditions. If you are arriving around rush hour on weekdays (17:00 - 19:00), it may be more convenient to take the sea-bus to Kadıköy on the Asian side (see instructions below) and take a taxi from Kadıköy to the institute (around 20YTL). This alternate route avoids much of the heavy congestion on the highways and bridges during those hours. How to get to Üsküdar from Atatürk International AirportThe Istanbul metro system connects the airport to Eminönü, where frequent ferries depart for Üsküdar. (Metro map.) Take the M1 line from the airport to Zeytinburnu, where you transfer to the T1 line in the direction of Kabataş. Get off at the Eminönü stop. Along the shore in Eminönü there will be a series of ferry terminals. Find the one marked Üsküdar. Ferries leave approximately every 20 minutes. (Detailed timetable.) Once in Üsküdar, follow these instructions to get to the Institute. How to get to Kadıköy from Atatürk International AirportThe Havaş bus company runs shuttles to the sea-bus (deniz ötöbüsü) terminal in Bakırköy. The shuttles leave approximately every 30 minutes from the departures gate at the airport (the first ring outside the gate is for taxis; the second ring is for the shuttle buses). The timetable is at the bottom of this page. There are a variety of shuttles to different destinations, but you can get assistance from the Havaş personnel at the curb to choose the right one. (Ask for Bakırköy, pronounced "Ba-kir-koy", or deniz ötöbüsü, pronounced "de-neez o-to-boosoo".) The sea-bus is a fast hydrofoil ferry that is one of the most convenient methods for commuting in Istanbul. The timetable between Bakırköy and Kadıköy is here. Note that most ferries go directly to Kadıköy, but a few make an intermediate stop at Yenikapı. Listen for the Kadıköy stop announcement before exiting the ferry. Once in Kadıköy, follow these instructions to get to the Institute. How to get to the Institute from Üsküdar![]() Once you have come to the port area of Üsküdar (where the ferries from Eminönü and Beşiktaş arrive) there are two options for traveling to the Institute:
The dolmuş and 15R bus both follow the same route. First-time visitors should ask the driver to point out either the Selvi Yolu or Bayrak Sokak stops (pronounced "Sel-vee Yo-loo" and "By-rak So-kak"). The travel time is between 30-40 minutes. If you miss these stops, do not worry: get off at the end of the line (Rasathane), and walk back along the main road for 5-10 minutes to get to the Bayrak Sokak stop (near the Canoba bakery). Once you have arrived at the Selvi Yolu or Bayrak Sokak bus stops, follow the map below. How to get to the Institute from Kadıköy![]() If arriving by sea-bus, walk along the shore toward the city center, and you will find the main public bus station. The 14R bus line passes near the institute (timetable and list of stops). It leaves from the bus stand indicated in the map above. If you have not purchased tickets beforehand, you can pay the driver while boarding (around 1.5YTL) First-time visitors should ask the driver to point out either the Selvi Yolu or Bayrak Sokak stops (pronounced "Sel-vee Yo-loo" and "By-rak So-kak").
